Landscape lighting starts with the yard, not the catalog
Where roofline lighting handles the house, landscape lighting handles everything below it: the walk, the beds, the trees, the steps. The goal is light you see the effect of, not fixtures you count. Done badly, you get a line of glowing dots along the path and not much else.
What goes in a typical plan
Most plans start with the walk, because that is the part you use whether or not anybody is looking. A light aimed up into a tree keeps the yard from going flat and black at nine at night. Then there are beds and low plantings, stairs and walls where the light is about footing, and the parking area.
Landscape, patio and security lighting overlap
Homeowners rarely want one category. Out back, patio lighting is the difference between a patio you use and one you look at. Security lighting deals with the corners of the lot, which is a different goal from the pretty work. Accent lighting is the finish work.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is volume. A yard lit evenly at every point looks flat, and flat is the one thing you were trying to avoid. The second mistake is aiming fixtures where people walk, so every guest gets a light in the eye on the way to the door. The third is forgetting that plants grow, when the shrub in front of the uplight has doubled.
Businesses and communities
On commercial property the brief changes. Outdoor seating only gets used after dark if the light is right. A parking area is about people getting to their cars. A neighborhood entrance is about the first impression of the whole community, which is why entrances get lit carefully.
Landscape lighting and roofline lighting in one plan
The two solve different problems, and most properties want both. Roofline light outlines the building, and the yard lighting gives the front of the property depth.Doing them at the same time beats adding one to the other later. If the budget only covers one this year, ask which half does more for your property, and it is not always the roofline.Unlike a roofline system, yard lighting moves. Fixtures get bumped by mowers, beds fill in around them, and aiming drifts. Once a year somebody should re aim what has drifted, which is a short job with a visible result.
